Social impact made simpler

About

Social impact and value made simple, credible, scalable and affordable.

About State of Life

We launched on 4th March 2020 with the help of David Knott (Director at the Office for CiviI Society in DCMS) and Lord Gus O’Donnell. And then a little thing called Covid-19 happened. We were fortunate to launch and we have thankfully been busy since.

Demonstrating social value is increasingly important for all types of organisation. In March 2020 we launched our simple, cost effective methodology and technology and a year later the 2021 HM Treasury Green Book supplementary guidance (chapter 5 on measurement and evaluation) explicitly recommends our methodology:

“use validated measures...that are consistent with existing measures” as this “makes it possible to compare findings with other approaches and could help to influence future programme and policy design”.

At State of Life, we aim to democratise and demystify social impact analysis to produce transparent, credible results. Our online tools and services make it easier and more cost-effective for both public and private sector organisations to measure and demonstrate the social value they create. So they can focus on making people healthier and happier.

The core team:

Will Watt - State of Life founder. State of Life was founded on the idea to use national data questions to understand social value and impact, this approach is now recommended in the HM Treasury guidance chapter 5 on how to measure wellbeing economics. Will swims, swears and works too much and he can be far too blunt for everyone’s liking.

Allan Little - His distinguished career in the Government Economic Service spans over 17 years. As an Economic Advisor at the Department for Education he led multi-disciplinary research teams on child safeguarding, children’s social care, early years education, and social mobility. Allan was co-author of the HM Treasury Supplementary guidance on wellbeing and received the John Hoy Memorial Award in 2021 for the best piece of economic analysis in Government. He is from the North and as they say up there he’s ‘right clever is our Allan’.

Lizzie Trotter - Lizzie is a social impact measurement specialist with experience across a range of sectors and contexts, and has worked in wellbeing analysis since 2013. Lizzie was Head of Social Impact at HACT (a think/do tank for the housing sector) and developed the UK’s first ever social value bank. Lizzie is calm and collected, she makes it all make sense.

Rose Fawcett - is our Lead Analyst with particular skills in impact evaluation and quantitative analysis. Her professional interest lies in evidencing positive change through data analysis. She has a background in economics & international development, impact evaluation in sport, spent a number of years in Tanzania, and holds a Masters in Economics and Econometrics. Rose is very diligent and caring - the best of us.

Jasmine Kazantzis - graduated in 2023 from LSE with a Distinction in her MSc in Behavioural Science. Before that, Jasmine achieved 1st class honours in her Economics degree at the University of Edinburgh. Jasmine is highly-trained in experimental and quasi-experimental research methods, including RCTs, participant recruitment, and survey design and execution. Her expertise also lies in the econometric analysis of large-scale wellbeing datasets.  Give her a few years and she’ll be running State of Life.

Matt Haworth - Matt brings a wealth of technical experience around using digital as a force to drive social good. Matt was recently voted Digital Entrepreneur of the Year at the Digital Entrepreneur Awards. His dad owns a pie shop.
